It is an iron sulfide mineral. It is said to be in a homomorphic relationship with pyrite, but the stability relationship is unclear. It occurs in shallow to deep hydrothermal deposits and fumarolic deposits, and can form nodules in sedimentary rocks. It has a very similar appearance to pyrite, but is rarer. It is idiomorphic and obliquely prismatic. It often forms pyrite pseudocrystals. In Japan, it is known from the Oppu Mine (closed) in Nishimeya Village, Nakatsugaru County, Aomori Prefecture, and the Matsuo Mine (closed) in Matsuo Village, Iwate County, Iwate Prefecture (now Matsuo, Hachimantai City). Its English name is said to come from the Arabic (one theory is Moorish) word for pyrite.
