It is one of the decorations used during celebrations. When a fishing boat returns from the sea, two fish are selected from the catch, hung up belly-to-belly, and offered to Ebisu near the port, as is common in Western Japan. It is called Kakeme. It is an event to give thanks for the harvest and pray for the next big catch. This custom spread inland and to towns, and it came to be used as a decoration for New Year's, Ebisu-ko, festivals, weddings, and other celebrations. There are various types of fish, but sea bream is often used because of its beautiful appearance and because it sounds auspicious . Raw sea bream is the formal way, but dried sea bream or salted sea bream can also be used, and fish are skewered on straw bundles, or in a formal version made of only straw. It is usually displayed next to or in front of a Shinto altar indoors. [Shoji Inoguchi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
