White Emperor City (English: Bai-di-cheng; Pai-ti-ch`êng)

A town located east of Fengjie County, Chongqing Municipality, China. A scenic spot overlooking Qutang Gorge, one of the Three Gorges of the Changjiang River. The name is said to come from the legend that Gongsun Shu, who was based here at the end of the Western Han Dynasty, found a white dragon in a well. Another theory is that Gongsun Shu called himself the White Emperor. As a strategic location that strangles the throat of the eastern Sichuan Plain, it has been valued as a strategic military location since ancient times. During the Three Kingdoms period, Shu built a fortress here, but was defeated by the forces of Wu. It is also known for the poems of Li Bai and Du Fu.

中国，チョンチン (重慶) 直轄市，奉節県の東に位置する町。チャン (長) 江三峡の1つチュイタン (瞿塘) 峡にのぞむ景勝の地で，地名は，前漢末にこの地に拠った公孫述が，井中より白竜を得たという伝説に由来するといわれ，また一説では，公孫述が，みずからを白帝と称したことによるともいわれる。四川平野東部の咽喉部を扼する要害の地であるため，古くから軍事上の要地として重視され，三国時代には蜀がここに築城したが，呉の勢力に敗れた。また，李白や，杜甫の詩によっても知られる。
