Anti-Buddhist ideology

While anti-Buddhist movements in Japan were deeply connected to political issues up until the early modern period, anti-Buddhist ideas spread in the Edo period along with the rise of various academic disciplines. Confucianism in particular was encouraged by the shogunate and various feudal domains, and developed greatly, particularly in the Neo-Confucian school. In the first half of the period, Neo-Confucianists such as Fujiwara Seika, Hayashi Razan, Yamazaki Ansai, Fujii Rasai, Sato Naokata, Muroki Yuso, and Kaibara Ekiken, as well as the Yangming school's Nakae Toju and Kumazawa Banzan, and the Old School's Yamaga Soko, Ito Jinsai, Ogyu Sorai, and Dazai Shundai strongly criticized the transcendental nature of Buddhism as anti-ethical and denying humanity.

日本の仏教排撃運動は，近世に至るまで政治問題と深く関係していたのに対して，江戸時代には諸学問の興隆とともに多くの排仏思想が広まった。なかでも儒学は幕府や諸藩が奨励したので，朱子学を中心に大いに発展した。前半期には，朱子学派の藤原惺窩（せいか），林羅山，山崎闇斎，藤井懶斎，佐藤直方，室鳩巣（むろきゆうそう），貝原益軒，陽明学派の中江藤樹，熊沢蕃山，古学派の山鹿素行，伊藤仁斎，荻生徂徠，太宰春台らが，仏教の超俗的性格を人道否定の反倫理的なものとして強力に批判した。
