In Norway, the area from which one ship was sent out was called a skipreide or a skipssýsle (meaning "ship duty" or "ship district"), in Denmark a skiben ("ship"), and the unit from which one rower was sent out was called a manngjerd ("crew duty") or a havne ("oar string"). The relationship between the ship district and the administrative unit was not clear in the early stages, but it is calculated that there were four or five skipens in one herred (the area corresponding to the Icelandic herad), and in Norway the number of ship districts does not match the actual number of mobilized sailors. It is in the Svean region of Sweden that the ship district and the administrative district seem to have coincided.
