A former town in Kitakoma County in northwest Yamanashi Prefecture. It is served by the Chuo Main Line and the Chuo Expressway. The northern part is a plateau at the southern foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains, and is a community dairy farming area, where highland vegetable cultivation is also thriving. In the southern part, sericulture and other activities are carried out. In November 2004, it merged with the towns of Suwa, Takane, Hakushu, Akeno, Oizumi, and Takekawa in Kitakoma County to become a city, Hokuto City. Area: 40.86 km2. Population: 9,507 (2003). 山梨県北西部，北巨摩(きたこま)郡の旧町。中央本線，中央自動車道が通じる。北部は八ヶ岳南麓の高原で，集団酪農地帯をなし，高原野菜栽培も盛ん。南部では養蚕などが行われる。2004年11月北巨摩郡須玉町，高根町，白州町，明野村，大泉村，武川村と合併し市制，北杜市となる。40.86km2。9507人（2003）。
