Evgenii Onegin

A novel in verse consisting of eight chapters by the Russian national poet Pushkin. Published between 1825 and 1832. Onegin, a nobleman of St. Petersburg who is intelligent and capable but disillusioned with real life and has no ideals or beliefs, inherits an estate upon the death of his uncle and moves to the countryside. Tatyana, the daughter of a neighboring landowner, falls passionately in love with Onegin, but Onegin is unable to see her good qualities and treats her coldly. He kills his friend Lensky, who is engaged to Tatyana's sister, in a duel and leaves the village. When Onegin meets Tatyana again a few years later, he is once again seduced by her love, but Tatyana rationally rejects him.

ロシアの国民詩人プーシキンの，8章から成る韻文小説。1825‐32年刊。知性も能力もありながら，現実の生活に幻滅し，理想も信念も持たぬペテルブルグの高等遊民オネーギンは，伯父の死によって領地を相続し，いなかに住むようになる。近隣の地主の娘タチヤーナはオネーギンを熱烈に愛するが，オネーギンは彼女の美点を見抜けず冷たくあしらい，タチヤーナの妹と婚約している友人レンスキーを決闘で殺し村を去る。数年後タチヤーナと再会したオネーギンは，こんどは自分が愛のとりことなるが，タチヤーナは彼を理性的にしりぞける。
