A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea, family Echinidae. This sea urchin has thick, heavy, rock-hard spines. The shell diameter and spine length are both 7 to 8 centimeters, and the spine diameter is just over 1 centimeter. The spines are reddish brown, and many have several white bands at the tip. The spines are used in accessories, and are strung together to make curtains, vase mats, necklaces, etc., or hollowed out to make pipes or pen holders. They are found in the coral reef waters of the Amami Islands, south of the southern Izu Islands, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean.
