Slate-pencil urchin

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea, family Echinidae. This sea urchin has thick, heavy, rock-hard spines. The shell diameter and spine length are both 7 to 8 centimeters, and the spine diameter is just over 1 centimeter. The spines are reddish brown, and many have several white bands at the tip. The spines are used in accessories, and are strung together to make curtains, vase mats, necklaces, etc., or hollowed out to make pipes or pen holders. They are found in the coral reef waters of the Amami Islands, south of the southern Izu Islands, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ウニ綱ナガウニ科に属する海産動物。重量感のある太くて石のように硬い棘(とげ)をもつウニ。殻径、棘長ともに7、8センチメートル、棘径1センチメートル余り。棘は赤褐色で、先のほうに数本の白帯のあるものが多い。棘はアクセサリーに用いられ、多数連ねてのれん、花瓶敷、ネックレスなどに加工したり、中をくりぬいてパイプやペン軸などにされる。奄美(あまみ)諸島、伊豆諸島南部以南、インド洋、西太平洋のサンゴ礁海域に分布する。
