Nergal - Nergal (English spelling)

Nergal - Nergal (English spelling)

In Mesopotamian mythology, Nergal is the god of the underworld, representing evils such as plague, war, and floods. His Sumerian name is Ne-unu-gal, "ruler of the great city (underworld)," and he is also known as Ela. He was worshipped at the Mesram temple in Kuta. He was later passed down to the Semites and worshipped in Palmyra. In the Old Testament, in the Book of Kings, Chapter 17, 30, it is written that "The people of Kuta created Nergal." The Sumerian myth "Nergal and Ereshkigal" tells the story of Nergal, who was brought to Ereshkigal (Eresh-ki-gal, "Queen of the Great Earth") for failing to pay his respects, and who instead takes Ereshkigal as his wife. In later times, Nergal descends to the underworld on the 18th day of the fourth month of the year, and returns to earth on the 180th day. He is accompanied by 14 fearsome attendants, all of whom are disease demons.
