A general term for fish of the Serranidae subfamily, which are part of the order Perciformes. Many species are found throughout the world, from temperate to tropical zones. More than 60 species are known to live in the waters around Japan, of which nearly 40 are of the genus Epinephelus, a typical grouper. In western Japan, especially in the Kansai region, groupers are generally called mas or ara. In English, they are generally called sea bass or grouper. Groupers can grow to lengths ranging from about 30 cm to nearly 4 m, but most are medium to large. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
