The name of the British 1 pound gold coin. It is also called the sovereign. It was established in the Coinage Act of 1816 when the UK adopted the gold standard, and was minted and issued as currency for domestic circulation until 1917. Since 1874, it has been issued as a bullion gold coin (a gold coin suitable for investment that is traded at a price not much different from the bullion value). It is still legal tender for 1 pound, but there is no face value indicated. Diameter 22mm, weight 7.988g, fineness 916/1000. The 1 pound gold coin is called a sovereign (monarch) because the 20 shilling (= 1 pound) gold coin issued in 1489 had a large portrait of the then King Henry VII on it.
