...From then on, the Wettins consistently sought to expand their territories to the surrounding areas, and under the long reign of Prince Henry III of Erlauchte (r. 1221-88), in 1243 they acquired Pleissenland, which had been developed by the Staufen dynasty (the territory was confirmed in 1255), and in 1247 they acquired two imperial principalities, the County of Thuringia and the County of Saxony (confirmed in 1264), becoming the largest territorial ruler among the German princes. In 1423, Prince Frederick I the Warlike (1381-1428) took the title of Grand Duke of Saxony, which had been held by the House of Ascania for two and a half centuries since the fall of Henry the Lion, and took it into his own hands, along with the titles of Elector and Master of the Empire. From this point on, the other states held by the House of Wettin were also called the Electorate of Saxony (Kurfürstentum Sachsen).
