English mathematician and astronomer in the first half of the 13th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. His English name was John of Holywood, and Sacrobusco (or Sacrobusco) is a Latin translation of Holywood, Yorkshire, where he was born. He first studied at Oxford University, and later moved to Paris, where he became a teacher at the university, and died there. He wrote De spheres, General Calculus, and Ecclesiastical Calculus. The most famous of these is De spheres, compiled around 1233, which is based largely on Falgani's astronomical texts. Due to its concise and concise description, it was used as the standard textbook for Aristotelian-Ptolemaic geocentric cosmology until the first half of the 17th century, and had a great influence on intellectuals in the Latin world of Western Europe.
