Heifetz

Japanese:
Heifetz
A Russian-born American violinist. One of the most famous performers of the first half of the 20th century. Born in Vilnia, Lithuania (now Vilnius, then part of Russia), he was a child prodigy, performing publicly at the age of five. In 1910, he studied under Auer in St. Petersburg, and in 1912, he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Nikisch in Berlin. The Russian Revolution broke out while he was in the United States, and he moved there. In 1925, he obtained U.S. citizenship. His precise technique and unbiased interpretation of works had a great influence on subsequent performance styles. He also enjoyed the music of his own time, commissioning Walton to perform the Violin Concerto. He is also famous for his Million Dollar Trio, which he formed with A. Rubinstein and Feuermann (later Piatigorsky). He first came to Japan in 1923.
