1846‐1917 His real name was William Frederick Cody. He was a pioneer in the American West. He was a skilled horse rider and shooter from an early age, and served as a scout for the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he hunted buffalo, which were both an obstacle to railroad construction and a source of food for workers, and later served as a cavalry scout. He was the protagonist of countless dime novels. In 1883, he began performing the Wild West Show, spreading the image of the rugged West all the way to Europe.
