A deciduous shrub in the Saxifragaceae family (APG classification: Hydrangeaceae). The leaves are opposite and short-stalked. The leaf blade is oblong-ovate or ovate, 5-10 cm long, pointed at the tip, and has sparse small sawtooth along the edge. Five prominent veins emerge from the base. In June and July, the plant produces large white flowers in clusters at the ends of the branches. The flowers are tetrameric, with four sepals and four petals. The petals are oblong-ovate and open, with a corolla about 2.7 cm in diameter. There are about 20 stamens. Each style is about 8 mm long and has four lobes at the tip. The ovary is inferior. The name refers to the flower shape of the Deutzias, which resembles that of a plum blossom, but the plant is not of the Deutzias genus, but of the Philadelphus genus. It grows along mountain paths and is distributed throughout Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
