Published in 1804, this is a masterpiece of German grotesque romanticism. There have long been many different theories about its author, with the most popular being the anonymous writer Friedrich Gottlob Wetzel (1779-1819), but in recent years, other theories have emerged. The protagonist, born to a gypsy mother and godfathered by the devil, tells of the illusions of this world from the perspective of a night watchman, an outsider from society. This novel was isolated within the German romanticism, which was dominated by a longing for the infinite, due to its destructive nihilism, which was centered around a turn to the negative.
