Exhaust gases are divided into smoke and soot generated during processes such as the combustion, synthesis and decomposition of materials, dust generated during mechanical processes such as crushing and sorting of materials, and exhaust from internal combustion engines such as automobiles. The Air Pollution Control Act classifies facilities into 32 types of smoke-generating facilities, 5 types of general dust-generating facilities, and 9 types of specific dust-generating facilities. The type and amount of exhaust gases generated vary depending on the fuel, raw materials, manufactured products, and manufacturing process, and exhaust gases are treated accordingly. The substances contained in smoke and soot that cause problems are mainly sulfur oxides (SOx ₎ and nitrogen oxides (NOx ₎ .

排ガスは，物の燃焼，合成，分解などの処理過程で発生するばい煙と，物の粉砕，選別など機械的処理過程で発生する粉塵および自動車などの内燃機関から排出されるものとに分けられる。大気汚染防止法では，ばい煙発生施設が32種類，一般粉じん発生施設が5種類，特定粉じん発生施設9種類に分類されている。排ガスの種類と発生量は，燃料，原料，製造品や製造工程によって異なり，排ガスの処理もそれらに応じてなされる。　ばい煙中に含まれる物質で問題になるのは主として硫黄酸化物SO_xと窒素酸化物NO_xである。
