This American law, known as the Philippine Independence Act, was enacted on March 24, 1934. It is said to represent the victory of the independence movement fought under the leadership of M. Quezon and S. Osmeña, and its main points included granting independence after a 10-year period and removing American military bases, except for certain naval bases. The Philippine Congress accepted this on May 1 of the same year, and in preparation for independence, a constitution was drafted, which was approved by the American president and by a national referendum in 1935. Elections were held in September of the same year, with Quezon and Osmeña becoming president and vice president under a high commissioner who replaced the previous governor-general. Complete independence was achieved on July 4, 1946. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
