A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (illustration) that is somewhat rare under coniferous forests in the subalpine zone. It has a thin, horizontally creeping underground stem. A small number of stems gather together to form small clumps, which are thin, 40-60 cm tall, and have 3-4 nodes. The leaves are thin and linear at the base and on the lower part of the stem, 10-20 cm long and 4-6 mm wide, and gradually become thinner and longer at the tip. The leaf sheaths are covered with fine hairs. The inflorescence appears at the top of the stem from May to July, and is a single upright raceme with 15-20 spikelets on one side of a 15-20 cm long central axis.
