Osuga Otsuji - Osuga Otsuji

Haiku poet. Born in Nakamura-cho, Fukushima Prefecture (present-day Soma City). His real name was Isao. He graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. He became familiar with haiku from middle school, and after entering university, he wrote haiku with Kawahigashi Hekigoto and Ogiwara Seisensui. His article "New Trends in the Haiku World" published in the inaugural issue of Akane in February 1908 (Meiji 41) gave a great hint to the "New Trends" movement of Hekigoto's school, but when Hekigoto became more radical and inclined to directly portray the reality of life, he tried to limit haiku to the range of seasonal sensations and symbols, and he criticized Hekigoto and came into conflict with Seisensui of Soun, who rejected seasonal themes and fixed forms. At one time, he joined Hekigoto and Nakatsuka Ippekiro's Kaiko, but he also parted ways with this group. He also wrote many essays on the seasonal themes, form, and tone of haiku. After his death, he published works such as "Otsuji Kushu" and "Otsuji Haironshu" (both in 1921) and "Otsuji Shokanshu" (1922).

俳人。福島県中村町（現相馬市）に生まれる。本名績(いさお)。東京帝国大学国文科卒業。中学時代より俳句に親しみ、大学入学後河東碧梧桐(かわひがしへきごとう)、荻原井泉水(おぎわらせいせんすい)らと句作した。1908年（明治41）2月『アカネ』創刊号に発表した『俳句界の新傾向』は碧梧桐一派の「新傾向」運動に大きな示唆を与えたが、碧梧桐が急進して生活現実の直写に傾くと、俳句を季感象徴の範囲にとどめようとし、碧梧桐を論難し、季題と定型を揚棄した『層雲』の井泉水とも対立し、一時は碧梧桐、中塚一碧楼(いっぺきろう)の『海紅(かいこう)』に入ったが、これとも別れた。俳句の季題、形式、調子に関する俳論も多い。没後『乙字句集』『乙字俳論集』（ともに1921）、『乙字書簡集』（1922）などが刊行された。
