A general term for mammals belonging to the Soricinae subfamily of the Insectivora family, Soricidae. They are known as one of the smallest mammal groups, with many species measuring 5 cm in length and weighing just a few grams. They resemble mice, but have long, pointed snouts and very small eyes. They have five toes on both their front and back feet, and many species have tails that are roughly the same length as their bodies. Their fur is soft and velvety. They are usually black-brown or chocolate-colored. They usually live on the moist forest floor, and are active day and night, using their small bodies to sneak around in thickets of grass and fallen leaves in search of food.
