Noma Peninsula

Japanese: 野間半島 - のまはんとう
Noma Peninsula

A small peninsula jutting out from the southwestern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is located in Minamisatsuma City. It is surrounded by a ria coastline, with the foothills of the mountains sloping steeply into the sea, creating a very uneven coastline. Numerous small islands and reefs are scattered around the area. The highest point is Nomadake, 591 meters above sea level. The area near the summit has a unique dome-like shape. The base of the peninsula is the Shimanto Group, but it is only exposed in parts of the northern coastline, and is mostly covered by Tertiary volcanic rocks (pyroxene andesite). At the tip, Noma Cape juts out into the East China Sea, sandwiched between Noma Pond, which is formed by a torrent sandbar. Tree staghorn trees grow everywhere, and evergreen broadleaf forests can be seen widely. The surrounding area is designated as Bo-Noma Prefectural Natural Park.
