Cross stone - staurolite

It is a mineral that occurs in crystalline schists and gneisses of mudstone origin together with ferruginous garnet, andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. It often forms columnar crystals, and is often named after the cross-shaped intrusion twins that intersect at right angles (about 90 degrees) or obliquely (about 60 degrees). In Japan, large crystals are abundant in mica schists in the Unazuki region of Toyama Prefecture. It also occurs as xenocrystals in volcanic rocks.

泥質岩起源の結晶片岩や片麻(へんま)岩中に、鉄礬(てつばん)ざくろ石、紅柱石、藍晶(らんしょう)石、珪線(けいせん)石などと産する鉱物。柱状の結晶をなすことが多く、しばしば直交（約90度）あるいは斜交（約60度）する貫入双晶をして十字形になることからこの名がある。日本では富山県宇奈月(うなづき)地方の雲母(うんも)片岩中に大きな結晶が多産する。また、火山岩の捕獲結晶としても産する。
