Japanese: ジュウイチ(十一) - ジュウイチ（英語表記）Horsfield’s hawk cuckoo

A bird of the Lesser Cuckoo family (illustration). Total length 32 cm. The upper body is blackish gray, the throat and neck are white, the chest and lower part are reddish brown, and there are 3 to 4 horizontal stripes on the tail. The white band on the neck is very noticeable. It is easily distinguished from other lesser cuckoos because it does not have black horizontal stripes on the belly. It is distributed from temperate to tropical regions in eastern Asia, and those from the north migrate to the Philippines and the Malay Peninsula in winter. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird around mid-May, and breeds in deciduous broadleaf forests and mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, mainly in the mountains north of Kyushu.

ホトトギス目ホトトギス科の鳥（イラスト）。全長32cm。体上面は黒灰色，のどと後頸（こうけい）は白く，胸から下が赤褐色で，尾に3～4条の横縞がある。後頸の白帯はよく目だつ。腹に黒い横縞がないことから，ほかのホトトギス類と容易に区別できる。アジア東部の温帯から熱帯地方にかけて分布し，北方のものは冬季フィリピンやマレー半島などに渡る。日本には夏鳥として5月中旬ころに渡来し，九州以北のおもに山地の落葉広葉樹林や針広混交林で繁殖する。
