Aoyama Cemetery

This metropolitan cemetery is located in Minamiaoyama, in the northwest of Minato Ward, Tokyo. It is located on the Yamanote plateau, and is said to have been the site of Aoyama Daizennosuke's mansion during the Edo period. It was opened as a cemetery for Shinto funerals in 1872 (Meiji 5), and designated as the first public cemetery in 1874. It was originally called Aoyama Cemetery, and was called a cemetery in 1935 (Showa 10). Its area is approximately 270,000 square meters. Politicians such as Okubo Toshimichi, Goto Shinpei, Mori Arinori, Inukai Tsuyoshi, and Hamaguchi Osachi, writers such as Ozaki Koyo, Kunikida Doppo, and Okamoto Kido, military men such as Nogi Maresuke, and scholars such as Kitasato Shibasaburo and Kawai Eijiro are buried here. There are many cherry trees in the sacred grounds, and it is also known as a famous flower spot. The Aoyama Funeral Hall (funeral hall) is located in the southeast corner. It is close to Gaienmae Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Nogizaka Station on the Chiyoda Line, Aoyama-itchome Station on the Ginza Line and Hanzomon Line, and Aoyama-itchome Station on the Toei Subway Oedo Line.

東京都港区北西部、南青山にある都立霊園。山手(やまのて)台地上にあり、江戸時代、青山大膳亮(あおやまだいぜんのすけ)の屋敷があった地と伝える。1872年（明治5）神葬墓地として開設、1874年に公営墓地の第一号として指定された。初めは青山墓地、1935年（昭和10）から霊園とよぶようになった。面積約27万平方メートル。霊園には大久保利通(としみち)、後藤新平、森有礼(ありのり)、犬養毅(つよし)、浜口雄幸(おさち)らの政治家、尾崎紅葉、国木田独歩、岡本綺堂(きどう)らの作家、さらに乃木希典(のぎまれすけ)らの軍人、北里柴三郎(きたさとしばさぶろう)、河合栄治郎らの学者が葬られている。霊域には桜樹が多く、花の名所としても知られる。南東隅に青山斎場（葬儀所）がある。東京地下鉄銀座線外苑前(がいえんまえ)駅、千代田線乃木坂駅、銀座線・半蔵門線青山一丁目駅、都営地下鉄大江戸線青山一丁目駅に近い。
