During the Quaternary Pleistocene, at least four cold climates struck, during which time North America and most of central and northern Europe were covered by continental glaciers. As a result, many of the temperate plant groups of Quaternary origin, such as deciduous broadleaf forests of beech, oak, and silver maple, which had previously occupied a wide area of the Northern Hemisphere, either became extinct in these areas or migrated south. Today, they remain in temperate regions and are distributed in an isolated manner. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
