A bird of the family Scolopacidae (illustration) in the order Charadriiformes. Total length is about 35 cm. It breeds in the mid-latitudes of the Eurasian continent and migrates to southern Europe, North Africa, and southern Asia. In Japan, it breeds on Honshu, Hokkaido, and the Izu Islands, and those in the northern regions migrate to warmer areas in winter. It has a very stocky body and a straight, long beak. Its feathers have complex markings of brown, gray, and black all over. During the breeding season, it lives in dense broadleaf forests and mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests from the plains to the low mountain zones, and males fly around in the evenings with irregular wing movements while making chirping sounds of "chiki-chiki" and "woo-woo."

チドリ目シギ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約35cm。ユーラシア大陸の中緯度地方で繁殖し，南ヨーロッパ，北アフリカ，南アジアなどに渡る。日本では本州と北海道，伊豆諸島などで繁殖し，冬は北の地方のものは暖地へ移動する。体は非常にずんぐりしていて，くちばしはまっすぐで長い。羽色は全体に褐色，灰色，黒色のまじった複雑な斑紋をしている。繁殖期には平地から低山帯によく茂った広葉樹林や針広混交林にすみ，雄は夕方，チキッチキッ，ウーウーと鳴きながら，不規則な翼動で飛びまわる。
