1870‐1964 Swedish businessman and sportsman. Graduated from Gothenburg University, majoring in electrical engineering. As chairman of the organizing committee for the 5th Olympic Games held in Stockholm in 1912, he succeeded in modernizing the running of the event. When the International Association of Athletics Federations was founded in the same year, he served as its first chairman (until 1946). In 1920, he became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and was elected vice-chairman in 1937 and fourth chairman in 1946, a position he held until 1952, during which he was involved in dealing with the complex issues that arose after World War II.
