A disease caused by hypothyroidism. Most cases are congenital, and develop within a few weeks to a few months of birth. The face is distinctive, with wide-set eyes, a low nose, thick lips, and a large tongue. The patient is short in stature and retarded in intelligence. The skin is swollen and dry, and constipation is severe. Teeth and bones are also poorly developed. Diagnosis is by thyroid tests and bone X-rays. Acquired cases are most common in women in their 40s, but can also occur in younger people. Treatment with desiccated thyroid powder can improve the condition to various degrees. In recent years, thyroxine and triiodothyronine preparations are mainly used.

甲状腺機能低下による病気。先天性のものが多く，生後数週〜数ヵ月で発症する。顔貌(がんぼう)は特有で，目と目の間が広く，鼻が低く，唇(くちびる)が厚く，舌が大きい。身長が低く，知能が遅れる。皮膚がはれぼったくかわいており，便秘がひどい。歯や骨の発育も悪い。甲状腺検査，骨のＸ線検査で診断する。後天性のものは40歳代の女性に多く，若年者にも起こることがある。乾燥甲状腺末で種々の程度に回復する。近年ではチロキシン製剤やトリヨードチロニン製剤がおもに用いられる。
