Also known as mucic acid. Chemical formula: HOOC(CHOH) 4 COOH. Colorless crystals. Somewhat soluble in warm water, insoluble in alcohol. Melting point: 213-214°C. A compound formed by oxidizing the terminal aldehyde group and primary alcohol group of D-galactose to carboxyl groups. Used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of galactose, and also as a raw material for the production of pyrrole. ムチン酸ともいう。化学式 HOOC(CHOH)4COOH 。無色の結晶。温水にいくらか溶け，アルコールに不溶。融点 213～214℃。D-ガラクトースの末端のアルデヒド基と第一アルコール基をカルボキシル基に酸化した化合物。ガラクトースの定性，定量に用いられるほか，ピロールの製造原料ともなる。
