Ushinoshita - Ushinoshita (English spelling) tongue fish

Japanese: ウシノシタ - うしのした（英語表記）tongue fish

A general term for the Soleidae and Cynoglossidae families of the Osteichthyes order. Local names include Beta, Geta, and Kutsuzoko, which are thought to be names derived from their flounder/flatfish-like shape. The former has both eyes on the right side of the body, while the latter has them on the left, but both have a unique hook-shaped mouth, and are also called tongue sole.

Japanese:

硬骨魚綱カレイ目に属するササウシノシタ科Soleidaeおよびウシノシタ科Cynoglossidaeの総称。ベタ、ゲタ、クツゾコなどの地方名があるが、カレイ・ヒラメ型の形状から名づけられたものと思われる。前者では体の右側に両眼があるのに対して後者では左側にあるが、いずれも口が鉤(かぎ)状の独特な形をしており、シタビラメともよばれる。
