Japanese: アリヅカムシ(蟻塚虫) - アリヅカムシ

A general term for insects belonging to the family Pselaphidae in the order Coleoptera. As their English name, ant-loving beetles, suggests, they are known to be ant-loving. All are small, with body lengths between 0.5 and 4 mm. They are reddish brown to dark brown in color, with extremely short elytra and large, exposed abdomens. Nearly 5,000 species are known from around the world, and about 170 species from Japan, but only a few groups are related to ants. The majority of species live in fallen leaves or soil, and those that prefer special environments include those that live on beaches, in sandy areas, in caves, as well as in ant nests and bird nests.

甲虫目アリヅカムシ科Pselaphidaeに属する昆虫の総称。英名ant‐loving beetleの名に示されるように好蟻（こうぎ）性の虫として知られている。いずれも体長0.5～4mmで小さい。赤褐色から茶褐色で上翅が著しく短く，腹部が大きく裸出している。世界から5000種近くが，日本からはおよそ170種が知られているが，そのうちアリと関連があるのは一部のグループである。大多数の種は落葉や土壌に生息し，特殊な環境を好むものとして，海浜性，砂地性，洞窟性のほか，アリの巣，鳥の巣にすむものなどがあげられる。
