A town in Tsuzuki County in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. The central settlement overlooks the Tahara River, a tributary of the Uji River, and has been a key transportation hub since ancient times, connecting Uji and Minamiyamashiro to Lake Biwa and Shigaraki. Cultivation of Uji tea, especially gyokuro, is thriving here. Other activities include the production of polished logs of cedar, cypress, and pine, forestry such as shiitake mushroom cultivation, rice cultivation, and vegetable cultivation.
