...In the 1980s, research into distributed representational process models became popular, and situated research into language and behavior progressed. Examples of achievements from this period include distributed representation of memory information, mental models (P. Johnson-Laird), subsumption architecture (RA Brooks), chaos theory and its applications, genetic algorithms, artificial life (C. Langton et al.), developments in research into socially distributed cognition, theory of visual information processing (D. Marr), parallel information processing in the nervous system (D. Hubel and MSLivingstone et al.), the brain's representation of color information (S. Zeki), fully interconnected neural network models (JJ Hopfield), Boltzmann machines (GE Hinton et al.), connectionist models of the mind (JL McClelland and DE Rumelhart), agent models of the mind (M. Minsky), phrase structure grammar (G. Gazdar et al.), situational semantics (J. Barwise and J. Perry), and planning as action embedded in a situation (L. Suchman). The 1990s saw many advances, including the construction of an information processing model that includes a relationship between the functions of the nervous system and those at the psychological and behavioral levels, the representation and processing of information in the brain and mind based on concepts such as distributed representation and self-organization, the construction of information science methods to explain the interactions between the outside world and living organisms (for example, the use of concepts such as constraint processing and agents, and the use of complex systems methodology), and information processing functions such as emotion, consciousness, and attention.
