Anoa - Anoa (English spelling)

It is a member of the order Artiodactyla and family Bovidae. It is found in the forests of Sulawesi Island in Indonesia. It is the smallest of the wild cattle, with a head and body length of 1.6 to 1.7 meters, shoulder height of 1 meter, and tail length of 25 to 30 centimeters. Both males and females have horns that are about 30 centimeters long and extend straight backwards. The body color is dark black and there is little hair, and especially in older animals, the body is almost completely naked. For an animal of its size, it is quite aggressive, lowering its head and charging forward. It usually lives in pairs in forests with abundant undergrowth, preferring waterside and shade of trees, and preferring to eat marsh grass and leaves. It rests during the day and is mainly active in the morning and evening. The gestation period is 276 to 315 days, and one baby is born at a time. The young are covered with dense yellowish-brown woolly hair. In Japan, there have been successful breeding cases at Namegawa Island in Chiba Prefecture (opened in 1964, closed in 2001). As of 2003, there are records of one male and two females being kept at the Kanazawa Zoo in Yokohama.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科の動物。インドネシアのスラウェシ島の森林に分布する。野生のウシの仲間ではもっとも小形で、頭胴長1.6～1.7メートル、肩高1メートル、尾長25～30センチメートル。雌雄ともに角(つの)があり、その長さは30センチメートルほどでまっすぐ後方に伸びている。体色は暗黒色で、毛は少なく、とくに老獣では体がほとんど裸出する。小形の動物にしては性質がかなり荒く、頭を下げて突進する。普通一つがいで、下草の豊富な森林で生活し、水辺や木の陰を好み、湿地の草、木の葉などを好んで食べる。日中は休息し、おもに朝と夕方に行動する。妊娠期間は276～315日で1産1子。幼獣には黄褐色の羊毛状の毛が密生している。日本では、千葉県の行川(なめがわ)アイランド（1964年開園、2001年閉園）で繁殖に成功した例がある。2003年（平成15）現在の記録では、横浜市立金沢動物園に雄1頭、雌2頭の飼育例がある。
