Uku [town] - Uku
This old town occupies Uku Island and Tera Island at the northern end of the Goto Islands in Kita Matsuura District, Nagasaki Prefecture. It was once the base of the Uku clan, ancestors of the Goto clan, and Taira, the central settlement, was the port of a privileged group of ama (fishermen) who had the right to harvest abalone during the Edo period. Abalone and turban shell harvesting, single-line fishing for yellowtail and squid, pearl farming are all carried out here, and orange cultivation and the traditional Goto beef breeding are also thriving. In March 2006, it was incorporated into Osaza Town, Kita Matsuura District, and Sasebo City, covering an area of ​​26.37 km2 . Population: 3,764 (2003).
