Japanese: あく(灰汁) - あく（英語表記）lye

This refers to the supernatant liquid obtained when the ashes of burnt plants are soaked in water. It is quite alkaline and has a cleaning effect that removes dirt well, so it has been widely used since ancient times as a detergent, bleach, and for dyeing. For example, ashes were already being used for laundry during the Heian period, and even recently it has been used to clean wooden houses as a "scum wash." In addition, in the manufacture of Japanese paper, papermaking materials such as the bark of the paper mulberry have long been boiled in scum to extract fibers. "Scum" extracted from land plants contains mainly potassium carbonate, while that from sea plants contains mainly sodium carbonate.

植物を焼いた灰を水に浸したときに得られる上澄みをいう。かなり強い塩基性を示し，洗浄作用があってよく汚れを落とすので，古くから洗剤，漂白剤として，また染色などに広く用いられていた。たとえば，平安時代にはすでに灰を洗濯に使っているし，最近までも木造家屋の洗浄に〈あく洗い〉として用いられていた。また和紙の製造には，古来，たとえばコウゾの皮などの製紙原料をあくを使って煮沸して繊維を取り出している。陸の植物からとった〈あく〉には主として炭酸カリウムが含まれており，海の植物には主として炭酸ナトリウムが含まれている。
