Neuchâtel (English spelling)

Japanese: ヌシャテル（英語表記）Neuchâtel

The name of the canton (state) and its capital that make up the Swiss Confederation. In German, it is called Neuenburg. The city has a population of 32,000 (1996). Founded at the end of the 12th century by the South German House of Zähringen, it is located in western Switzerland bordering both Germany and France, and has had a history of repeated changes of rulers. Since 1707, except for a period under the Napoleonic regime (1805-14), it has been a territory of the King of Prussia. As a principality under the King of Prussia, it joined the Swiss Confederation in 1814, but the Swiss side requested that it assume a politically independent position from the Prussian state.

スイス連邦を構成するカントン(州)，およびその州都名。ドイツ語ではノイエンブルクNeuenburg。都市の人口は3万2000(1996)。12世紀末に南ドイツのツェーリンゲン家によって建設され，独仏両国に接する西スイスに位置し，領主さだめがたい転変の歴史を繰り返した。1707年以降はナポレオン体制下の一時期(1805‐14)を除いてプロイセン国王の領地となった。プロイセン国王を君主に仰ぐ公国のまま，1814年スイス連邦に加入したが，プロイセン国家から政治的に自立した立場をとることをスイス側から要請された。
