1842‐81 American poet, musician, and critic. Born in Georgia. Immediately after graduating from college, the Civil War broke out and Lanier joined the Confederate Army, becoming a prisoner of war with the Union Army in 1864. After the war, in 1873, he became a flute player in an orchestra in Baltimore, and in 1876 taught English literature at Johns Hopkins University. His poems include Symphony (1875) and Glynn's Marsh (1878), and he is considered the greatest Southern poet since Poe, but he lacked Poe's genius. His prose works include The Science of English Poetry (1880), which discusses the relationship between poetry and music. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
