…The formation of town houses began at the end of the Sengoku period, and before the Kanbun era (1661-73), the area was divided into 1-chome to 6-chome. In the early Edo period, the area flourished as a town for merchants dealing in seafood, with a section in 1-chome commonly known as Asari-dana Yokocho and in 3-chome known as Sakana-dana. In 1725 (Kyoho 10), the famous Nihonbashi kimono merchant Izukuraya Kichiemon opened a branch in Sakana-dana, which became very popular, and Sakana-dana was also called Izukura Yokocho. …
