The name of the ossuary built in the mountains of Guadarrama, 58 km northwest of Madrid, Spain, to mourn those who died in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). In Spanish, it is called Valle de los Caídos. Completed in 1958, the ossuary carved into a rocky mountain features a huge cross that rises 150 m from the foundation stone. When it was built, the defeated side of the civil war criticized it for demonstrating the legitimacy of the victorious Franco regime both at home and abroad, rather than for comforting the spirits of the dead.
