The capital of the Republic of Chad in north-central Africa. Located in the southwestern part of the country, it borders Cameroon across the Chari River, which flows into Lake Chad. In the Middle Ages, it became the center of the Kanuri Kingdom and flourished as a transit point for trade with the Sahara. It has a river port and is an important transportation hub.
