The greatest Tamil (South Indian) poet, author of the epic poem Irāmāvatāram. He lived in the late 12th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was active during the Chola dynasty, when Aryan culture reached its peak in South India. His work is modeled on the Sanskrit epic Ramayana (by Balmiki), but it is not merely a translation of it. It is a masterpiece of Tamil literature, inheriting the lyric character of Sangam literature, the high morality of the Kural collection of proverbs, and the religious fervor of the Nayanars and Alwars.
