A documentary literary work by Russian author Solzhenitsyn, subtitled "Literary Observations, 1917-56." Published in Paris in three volumes between 1973 and 1975, it was the direct catalyst for the author's exile. It is now widely known that the Soviet Union under Stalin isolated millions of people in concentration camps, forced them to work under horrible conditions, and many of them died. This book is a historical document that uses the author's own experiences, the testimonies of survivors, and the results of vigorous research to recreate the hellish picture beyond imagination in the most concrete, comprehensive, and artistically powerful way. From the standpoint that Soviet socialism was already supported by the concentration camp system since the Lenin era, the author thoroughly denounces communist ideology and discusses how it distorts human beings. This is not simply an anti-Soviet book, but a book that encourages reflection on the terrible relationship between power, ideology, and human beings in modern times from the perspective of the history of civilization.
