According to legend, the city was named after Abraham and the servants of Abimelech, king of nearby Gerar, who made a covenant (shuvua) over the use of a well (beel) (Genesis 21:31). It flourished as a desert oasis town from ancient times, and before the founding of Israel, it was a trading market for the Bedouins of the Negev. A weekly market was held at the Well of Abraham on the outskirts, and it was bustling with nomads who gathered there with sheep, camels, clothing, and other goods. After the First Arab-Israeli War of 1948-49, when the State of Israel was established, most of the Arab residents were expelled, and the city rapidly modernized and developed as a Jewish city. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Abraham's Well" is listed below.
