Born in Shinano, his surname was Yoshikawa, and he was commonly known as Taizo, and later Shirobei. His older brother was the comic novelist Shuntei Sankyo. He was a pupil of the first Utagawa Toyokuni, and was mainly active in the field of illustrations for novels such as Tamenaga Shunsui's Ninjyohon.
