Vagina - Chitsu

It is a part of the female internal genitalia, a tubular organ that continues from the vaginal portion of the cervix. It is about 6 to 7 centimeters long, and is flattened from front to back, with the front and back walls usually touching each other. In front of the vagina are the bladder and the urethra that comes out of the bladder. At the back, at the top end, is the recto-uterine pouch, which is the deepest part of the peritoneal cavity. The rectum is in contact with the posterior wall of the middle third of the vagina. The anus is located behind the lower third of the vagina. The lower end of the vagina is the vaginal opening, which is sandwiched between the labia minora and opens into the vaginal vestibule. The opening is closed by the labia minora and labia majora. Most women who do not have sexual intercourse have a thin mucosal fold, or hymen, at the rear edge of the vaginal opening. The opening is also extremely sensitive to touch. The mucous membrane on the inner wall of the vagina has many transverse mucosal folds and is highly extensible. When in an upright position, the long axis of the vagina is inclined at about 60 degrees from the horizontal plane. The vagina, together with the uterus, is fixed and supported within the pelvis.

女性内性器の一部で、子宮頸部(けいぶ)の腟部に続く管状の器官である。長さ約6～7センチメートルで、前後に圧平され、通常、前後壁は接している。腟の前方には、膀胱(ぼうこう)と膀胱から出る尿道がある。後方は、その上端に腹膜腔(ふくまくくう)のもっとも深い底の部分である直腸子宮窩(しきゅうか)がある。腟の中(なか)3分の1の後壁部分には直腸が接している。同じく下3分の1の部分の後方には肛門(こうもん)がある。腟の下端は腟口となり、左右の小陰唇に挟まれて腟前庭に開く。腟口は左右の小陰唇、大陰唇などで圧閉されている。性交を経験しない女性の大部分は腟口の後縁に薄い粘膜ヒダ（襞）、すなわち処女膜がある。また、腟口は触覚がきわめて鋭敏である。腟内壁にある粘膜には横走の粘膜ヒダが多く、伸展性に富んでいる。直立位のとき、腟の長軸方向は水平面と約60度の傾斜を呈する。なお、腟は子宮とともに骨盤内に固定支持されている。
