...In the Roman monarchy and early republic, the word meant a kind of status, but later came to refer generally to those under a relationship of guardianship and subservience. Clientes is the plural of the Latin word cliens, meaning "protected," and the relationship of guardianship and subservience is called clientela. Clientes as a status were free in terms of personality, but they belonged to the patrician (noble) gens (clan) and are presumed to have participated in its rituals.
