An insect of the Hymenoptera family, Pycnonotidae. Also known as the Mikado Tokkuri Bachi. Its body is black with yellow spots. Its abdominal stalk is thin and it bends its abdomen when flying. It is found throughout Japan and builds a sake bottle-shaped nest using mud on the flat surface of rocks or on grass stalks. These nests are eye-catching and have been called Tokkuri Bachi since ancient times. It hunts moth larvae and stores them in its nest to feed the larvae. Related species found in Japan include E. rubrofemoratus , E. samuray , E. fraterculus (illustration), and Oreumenes decorata . Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
